Geology of Ore Deposits
Published in Hardcover by W H Freeman & Co. (February, 1986)
Authors: John M. Guilbert and Charles Frederick Park
Average review score:

The Geology of Ore Deposits
This book, by Guilbert and Park, is the "Bible" for any economic geologist on ore deposits. As a graduate student in geology, I am constantly using it as a reference and use it more frequently than any other book I have. We used another textbook for my economic geology course, but all of us referred to "The Geology of Ore Deposits" when some info was needed. It is also on several professers shelves as well. Well organized and easy to find specific info.

George Eliot: Voice of a Century: A Biography
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1996)
Author: Frederick Robert Karl
Average review score:

The Study of an Amazing Intellect
George Eliot, born Mary Ann Evens, author of arguably the greatest novel in the Victorian era, Middlemarch, was not just an author but an intellectual giant. She translated works of philosophy from the German and from Latin; knew and exchanged ideas with the brightest minds of the time; was fluent in 7 languages (French, Italian, German, Latin, Hebrew, Greek and Spanish), and was compelled by a natural curiosity to acquire knowledge all through her life.

Her life with a married man created a Victorian scandal, yet by the time of her death in 1880 she was England's most celebrated author visited even by Queen Victoria's daughters.

This biography is a thorough, accessible and engrossing book. Author Karl is a fan of Eliot's yet hides none of her blemishes. While he generally refuses to speculate on a lot of Victorian gossip regarding her life, he at times annoys the reader with some unwarranted attempts to psychoanalyze her (I do get tired of the injection of Freud into literature). The slowest parts of the book deal with her frequent trips to Europe. We learn what she did on Tuesday in Berlin, and then her activities in Hamburg on Wednesday. While I realize that the recording of such information is important in providing a fairly complete detail of her life, I tend to nod a bit at the lengthy reports of her travels.

Historically we are blessed with a huge number of extant correspondence of Eliot. The author makes good use of these letters, yet the book does not turn into an epistolary work i.e. a book of nothing but verbatim letters.

One of my purely personal problems with the book was that I have not read all of Eliot's novels. Mr. Karl, of necessity perhaps, relates much of the plots of her books, and thus creates a real spoiler for the novels that I haven't read. That's my problem, of course, and not the author's.

It would seem that people today are probably unaware of this important author who was known throughout England during her writing lifetime. Her novels and her life are an important part of the literary canon. I heartily recommend this well crafted book

Germans in Wisconsin
Published in Paperback by State Historical Society of Wisconsin (June, 1977)
Authors: Richard H. Zeitlin and Frederick Hale
Average review score:

Values and ideas Germans brought with them to Wisconsin
From 1820 to 1910 German-speaking immigrants immigrated to Wisconsin in search of new homes, opportunities, political and religious freedom. By 1900 Wisconsin had a wealth of German farmers, merchants, manufacturers, editors, educators, churches (both Catholic and Lutheran), and communities making up the Wisconsin social, political, cultural, and economic landscape. With his seminal treatise, Germans In Wisconsin, Richard Zeitlin describes the values and ideas Germans brought with them to Wisconsin as he highlights their achievements in both rural and urban settings over the course of the last 150 years. A "must" for all Wisconsin school and community library collections, historical photographs enhance Zeitlin's informative and engaging text.

Author: Frederick S. Perls
Average review score:

A book worth to read again from time to time.
This book has meant much to me personally. I always suggest that people buy the book for themselves. I am so dissappointed because I did not get my book back from someone who borrowed it. However, for me it is worth it to buy another one.

The Getting of Wisdom
Published in Hardcover by Mercury House (May, 1993)
Authors: Henry Handel Richardson, Ethel Florence Richardson, and Frederick McCubbin
Average review score:

An Australian Rebel
I remember reading this book as a teenager, and thinking, "Yes, I understand!" every time the heroine, Laura, found herself at odds with the relentless conformity of school society. Set at a turn-of-the-century boarding school in Melbourne, Australia, "the Getting of Wisdom" is a classic tale of a girl who thinks for herself and, thus, is forever out of step with both her society and her classmates. Laura tries desperately to fit in, but never quite does. Still, in the end, the reader is sure that Laura will be the one to soar high in life -- not her more conventional peers. As Richardson says, "She could not know then, even for the squarest peg, the right hole may ultimately be found; seeming unfitness prove to be only another aspect of a peculiar and special fitness." Almost 100 years old, the book's message is still fresh today, which is why Richardson is considered one of Australia's greatest novelists.

Goudy's Type Designs: His Story and Specimens (The Treasures of Typography Series, Bk. 2)
Published in Hardcover by Oak Knoll Press (May, 1979)
Authors: Frederick W. Goudy, Paul A. Bennett, and Frederic W. Goudy
Average review score:

Frederic Goudy deserves to be remembered.
There's much more to the type of Frederic Goudy than Goudy Oldstyle, and you'd be suprised at some of the familiar typefaces that came from his hand. He created over 100 types, including what is now known as Berkely and Copperplate. Most designers are lucky if ONE of their types finds its way into common use. Goudy has at least ten. This is a facsimile of a volume that appeared in Goudy's lifetime. My only complaint is that I wish it had been reproduced on letterpress -- printed pages produced by modern means do not carry the same authority, or produce the characteristic relief of the old printing methods. Nonetheless, we are fortunate to have it available.

Great Destinations: The Nantucket Book : A Complete Guide (Great Destinations Series)

Authors: Betty Lowry and Frederick G. Clow

The history and culture of Nantucket along with lots of prac
THE NANTUCKET BOOK is one good read! There are well-researched chapters on the Island's history, and culture. Did you know that Nantucket has more toally preserved buildings in the National Register of Historic Places than Boston, Salem, or Plymouth? And that it was a refuge for escaping slaves and free blacks after slavery on the island was abolished in 1770? The book is also chucked full of lodging, eating, shopping, environmental, and recreational information. I used it to plan my summer vacation. But its a great read for armchair travelers too.
